Chicago, Illinois - On Thursday, Jairo Avitia, 25, was found hanging and unconscious at about 5:49 p.m. at his holding Cook County Jail cell by a deputy. Avitia was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. An autopsy report on Friday indicated Avitia died from anoxic encephalopathy caused by hanging and was ruled a suicide by the Cook County Medical Examiners Office.
Avitia had attempted to commit suicide on January 25 after he was charged with two felony counts for predatory sexual assault of a child and a bond of $325,000 cash was set for Avitia.
According to the criminal complaint, Avitia forced to a 10-year-old boy to touch his genitals and other parts of his body. He even asked the boy to shower with him. The sexual acts were committed between December 1 to January 17 when the boy visiting a child friend where Avitia was staying. The boy later told his relatives who contacted police.
